A.M. "Deaf Idioms" - Always a favorite! Learn
signs that are particular to the Deaf community not always learned in the classroom or from a text book. Bill uses his
inspiring humor to demonstrate how to use these signs that he grew up
with. (See above for times and fees, below for registration info)
P.M. "Making Faces" - Facial Expressions are crucial in expressing and understanding ASL! These non-manual markers have grammatical importance and can actually change the meaning of certain signs. Hearing people are often reluctant or uncomfortable to contort their faces, but in this workshop, not only will you learn the different expressions to use, you'll also get plenty of hands-on practice with the Master of Expressions, Bill Rennie! 9:30am-3:30pm - "Preparing for the NIC" presented by Nicole Nadeau - If you are getting ready to take the RID National Interpreter Certification (NIC) performance test, then don't miss out on this workshop! Nicole, a NIC Master Level, will review all of the tenents in detail then will discuss and practice some hands-on scenarios. Bring all your questions and Nicole will shed some light onto this important next step of your career.
Cost for this workshop is $45 and includes a salad bar lunch.
A.M. "So You Want To Be A Video Relay Interpreter!" presented by Nicole Nadeau & Jennifer Alexander - Have you been thinking about joining the Video Relay team? Nicole and Jennifer will give you pointers on the who, what, where and why's of becoming a VR Interpreter! The last part of the workshop will be some hands-on practice of VR interpreting. P.M. "Sign to Voice Practice & Evaluation" - You asked for it! You got it! Need some hands-on practice voicing for the Deaf in a safe, non-threatening environment? Then this workshop is for you! We will have some special Deaf visitors who will come and sign stories & conversations for you as you voice for them. Nicole and Jennifer will take the time to evaluate your skills in an encouraging, non-judgemental, yet honest way. If you feel you're just not ready to be evaluated, then you can come and participate by just watching and hearing the feedback. Due to the nature of this workshop, it will be limited to 15 active participants. When registering, please inform us if you will be an active participant of an observer. A.M. - "Interpreting Church Music" presented by Bill & Bonnie Rennie - Interpreting music is so different than everyday interpreting! Come and bring the words (and a CD, if you have it) to a song you'd like to have translated into the beautiful language of ASL as we dialog about the true meanings of the songs and discuss the different possibilities of how to translate it. P.M. - "Classifiers, Hand Shapes & ASL" -ASL hand shapes can convey multiple meanings, depending on their use and context. Classifiers are also a beloved feature of ASL literature. In this workshop, you'll learn the essentials of classifiers, how and when to use them and the concept of "don't tell - SHOW!" A.M. "Basic ASL Structure" - As most of you know, ASL is NOT English. It has it's own grammer and "word" order. English grammar doesn't show a picture, but sound and words. In ASL, you have to think in pictures the way the Deaf do! In this workshop, we'll review the basics of how to structure ASL and to think in pictures! P.M. "ASL Homonyms & Synonyms" presented by Bill & Bonnie - In this workshop, we will learn same-English words that have different signs (ie; "right" turn & "right" answer). We will also learn same or similar signs that have different meanings (ie; almost/easy). We will learn the subtleties that change the meanings of the signs. If you're having trouble remembering these kinds of signs or you find them confusing, you won't want to miss this workshop! P.M. "Sign Variations or 'Why Are There So Many Signs for Birthday!'"
- Variation in any language means that people have different ways of
saying or signing the same thing. In this workshop, we'll explore the
factors of sign variation and why they are important to us as signers
of ASL, as well as the geographical & social influences of sign

A.M. "Finger Spelling Warp" - Some Deaf sign so fast, you think it's nearly impossible to understand them! Bill Rennie understands your frustrations! In this workshop, he will give you some techniques to see the finger spelling in "3-D" to help "catch" the finger spelled words. Great hands-on practice throughout the workshop! P.M. "Common Mistakes in ASL" -In this workshop we will discuss the misunderstandings and common mistakes we make when receiving and expressing ASL. Learn how a "yes" can actually mean "no" and visa-versa! (See above for times & fees, below for registration info)
A.M. "Deaf Culture vs. Hearing Culture" - Bill Rennie grew up deaf in a hearing family. In this workshop, Bill will share his humorous and often times touching experiences growing up in the deaf and hearing cultures. (See above for times & fees, below for registration info)
P.M. "Story Telling in ASL" - Beloved ASL story telling is a vision to behold! Bill will show you how to recognize the different characters in the story and to understand the differences in story telling and discourse. A.M. "Religious Signs" - We teach this workshop just once a year, so don't miss this opportunity to learn over 100 Religious signs! A great resource for those working in a Deaf Ministry or Deaf Church! (See above for times & fees, below for registration info)
P.M. "Deaf Ministry & Interpreting in Church" - In this round table discussion, we will talk the basics of Deaf Ministry and about how interpreting in church differs from other situations. We'll discuss how to conceptually sign scripture and the roll of the interpreter in church. After discussion, we will have some hands-on practice as we listen to a taped sermon and give it a try! Must cancel within 48 hrs. prior to workshop for a credit for another
workshop within a given semester. If cancelled less than 48 hrs., no
credit will be given.

PLEASE NOTE - New RID CEU Policy: Due to the cost of providing RID
CEUs for our workshops, beginning January 1, 2010, if you see a workshop does not list that CEUs are being provided and you would like to
receive RID CEUs, your request must be submitted to our office no later
than 40 days prior to the workshop date. There will be a $7 fee that
will include Sign Language Factory doing all the required paperwork
and a "Certificate of Attendance". SCRID is the approved RID CMP Sponsor for Continuing Education Activities.
If you would like to request
a regular "Certificate of Attendance" for any workshops you attend, for
the purpose of providing proof of attendance to an employer or for your
own records, the fee will be $5. Please inform our office at time of
registration if you are requesting a regular "Certificate of
Attendance".
At any time, you may request an email receipt that
will include the date, title and number of hours for each workshop you
attended.
